Well, it’s in the name. Spyware spies on your computer. Spies on your personal information, spies on the websites you visit and anything else you do while you browse the internet. Although you don’t know it’s running, it is still constantly and continually collecting information on you, the computer user. Along with collecting all this personal and valuable information, guess what? It transmits this information back through your internet connection sucking up available bandwidth and therefore, making your connection slow. So you have all your personal information and your internet connection being slowed. I’d concentrate on the first rather than the latter in this situation.
Luckily for us, there are some antibiotics to spyware in the form of spyware programs. This software will kick spyware in the butt and ultimately to the curb and out of your computer. But, not all spyware removal software is created equal. All possess varying degrees of effectiveness along with a varying price range. But does higher price mean better product? Sometimes, but not necessarily in this case.
The way spyware removal software works is like this. The software will scan parts or the entire hard drive and files in the computer for spyware. Most spyware software has an option for this, all or part of your files. Once the software works its magic, you’ll get a report, or file, or something to let you know the spyware is gone. Now, some programs offer continual protection against active attacks by spyware and others don’t. This is where paid and free versions of spyware removal software differ usually. You should look for software that is minimally invasive to you and your other programs while it scans for spyware.
Now, spyware is tricky. And new spyware is always being made. So in order to make sure you are protected against the latest spyware, you should run spyware software that automatically updates itself. With the updated spyware definitions, it will be able to detect, and remove or quarantine new spyware. In order to get the best program, you should do some research. Download spyware removal software from a reliable source.

What are the best free Anti Virus and Spyware removal software?

the guy frombest buy told me so

That’s relatively easy question…
Anti-virus :
♣ Avira
♣ Avast!
Avira has the best detection rate among all anti-virus program, its fast, doesn’t slow down your computer, great for scanning files / folders / drives, reliable removal, easy to use and configure… Generally, if you are downloading a lot / torrent / p2p / web Avira is the choice for you.
But if you aren’t as heavy downloader, then rather pick Avast!. Avast! has really advanced protection on the net ( better protection when surfing ), it will find bad scripts in malicious websites and block connection with the site. Its detection rate is worse than Avira’s, if you ask me it has awfully complicated main panel and i think it generates a LOT of false positives, basically for each keygen and crack.
So :
Heavy downloaders : pick Avira
Heavy surfers : pick Avast!

Anti-spyware :
♣ SUPERAntiSpyware
♣ Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
♣ Spyware Terminator
SUPER and Malwarebytes are only scanners, free version has no real-time protection, but they are very effective when scanning and you can install them both, or all 3 of them, without any fear they will interfere each other.

Tutorial & review on Malwarebytes : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP49L6HtgNQ&hd=1
Spyware Terminator is special, because its one of the rare if not the only anti-sypware tool that also offers 100% real-time protection and its providing it free of charge. I definitely suggest you to install it and use it as your primary anti-spyware protector.
If you need removers, i can also mention HijackThis… Its able to recognize and remove malicious registry entries, pretty helpful for final cleaning.

Well, as a Virus and Computer expert knowing this is a MUST and I’ve got to say…the one i absolutely LOVE is Malware Bytes! http://www.malwarebytes.org/ You can use the free version for how ever long you want, theres a purchased version but if you run a scan once a day….it really doesn’t do any good to waste your money. Just yesterday, i had a horrible trojan on my laptop and i was foolish enough to go days without running a scan…well i had to hack my own laptop, go into safe mode, restore it, and then run a scan. Yep, just my luck.

I have used Zone Alarm Firewall, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just changed to Avast antivirus and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Will people ever learn, There is no such thing as a best free anything. "Best" & Free" shouldn’t even be used in the same sentence with "Anti Virus" All free AV’s have security holes. All free AV’s have features missing.
AVG- No real tim root kit protection. Trojan Mal ware walks right by it.
Avast- No heuristic scanning in the free version. There are thousands of infections it will not remove because of it lacking this feature. Also it’s boot time scan that everyone seems to brag about. Because of this it’s pretty well worthless.
Avira- No web guard, Anti drive by. Better than the other two but still not good enough with today’s ever changing internet.
Pay for your AV. You will be miles ahead of the others and way safer. Get Kaspersky if you can. It ain’t cheap but it works.
If you can’t and all you can do is free. Don’t expect much. Don’t get upset when you get infected.

You need a firewall.
Type in firewall in the above.

You need both Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy/Malware (AV/AS) solutions for complete coverage. Plus, web site validation products and software patch updaters is the final touch.
AV Independent Testing Feb 2009 Highest Rated: Kaspersky, Nod32, Norton, McAfee
AV Rated Above Average: Avira, Avast, BitDefender, F-Secure, eScan
AV Rated Average: AVG, Sophos, OneCare
http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report21.pdf
As to the FREE products, Avira’s Antivir has a detection rate of over 99%, includes "root-kit" protection, and uses less system resources. Avast detection rate is around 97.8% and includes "root-kit" protection. Avast Anti-Virus is good if people suggest that, Avira is just slightly better. AVG’s detection rate is less than 85% for Script Malware and General Malware, and does NOT include "root-kit" protection in the FREE version…plus, slower scan speeds and a higher number of "false positives".
A good FREE AV/AS mix could be Avira or Avast, with Malwarebytes and AdAware. Or, a good BUY/FREE AV/AS mix could be Kaspersky or Nod32, with Malwarebytes and AdAware.
I’m also considering the new VIPRE as a possible BUY next time based on early reports.
